‘When Will the Trial Begin?’ TDP MP Chintakayala Vijay Raises 13-Year Delay in Cases Against Former Andhra Pradesh CM
# YSRCP MPs repeatedly disrupted the proceedings as TDP MP Chintakayala Vijay questioned the 13-year delay in high-profile CBI cases and called for urgent judicial reforms.
The Rajya Sabha witnessed heated exchanges during the discussion on the Supreme Court Amendment Bill after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Member of Parliament Chintakayala Vijay raised the issue of prolonged delays in Special CBI Courts. Even as YSRCP MPs repeatedly interrupted his speech with protests, Vijay remained steadfast and urged the House to broaden the debate beyond the Supreme Court by addressing the persistent delays in Special CBI Courts, which were established to ensure speedy justice in corruption and other sensitive criminal cases.
Participating in the debate, Vijay said that while reforms concerning the Supreme Court are necessary, the functioning of Special CBI Courts also demands immediate attention. He noted that these courts were created to deliver swift justice, but years-long delays have defeated their very purpose, eroding public confidence in the justice delivery system.
Highlighting what he described as one of the most glaring examples of judicial delay, Vijay referred to the 31 cases pending against former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He pointed out that despite the passage of 13 years, there has been no meaningful progress in these cases. The first-time parliamentarian further observed that eight different judges have handled the matters during this period, underscoring the severe shortage of judges and its impact on the timely disposal of cases.
Posing a sharp question to the House, Vijay asked, “If even after 13 years the discharge petition is still being heard, when will the trial begin?” He said such prolonged delays raise serious concerns about judicial efficiency and highlighted the urgent need to fill judicial vacancies and strengthen the functioning of Special CBI Courts.
Despite continuous disruptions by YSRCP MPs, Vijay completed his intervention, reiterating the need for comprehensive judicial reforms that extend beyond the Supreme Court. His speech drew attention to the long-pending challenges faced by Special CBI Courts and reinforced the importance of ensuring timely justice, greater judicial accountability and a stronger justice delivery system for the people.
