Indian Researchers monitoring air quality across the Himalaya

Researchers monitoring air quality across the Himalaya have identified a significant shift from predominantly clean air to increasingly polluted conditions, raising concerns over the fragile mountain ecosystem and public health.

The study found that pollutants transported from rapidly urbanising and industrial regions, along with local emissions and changing weather patterns, are contributing to deteriorating air quality in the Himalayan region. The findings highlight the growing impact of human activities on one of the world’s most ecologically sensitive landscapes.

Researchers say worsening air pollution could accelerate glacier melting, affect water resources, threaten biodiversity, and increase health risks for mountain communities. The study underscores the need for sustained air quality monitoring, stronger emission control measures, and coordinated regional efforts to protect the Himalayan environment.
