The announcement was made during CMAI India Climate Week 2026.

Addressing stakeholders, policymakers, and climate experts at the event, the Minister highlighted the capital’s proactive approach in tackling environmental challenges amid rapid urbanization and population growth.

“It is our foremost responsibility to care for Delhi’s environment. With the city’s growing population, we are meeting this challenge head-on. Delhi is working toward its net-zero commitment with green infrastructure, sustainable transport, and a green-focused budget this year. We are also creating a robust Net-Zero framework to guide the city’s journey to a greener future,” said Shri Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Welcoming the announcement, Mr. Manish Dabkara, President of the Carbon Markets Association of India, said, “Integrating carbon market mechanisms can unlock new opportunities for emissions reduction, incentivise sustainable business practices, and attract climate investments. A well-designed framework can position Delhi as a frontrunner in leveraging carbon markets to accelerate its net-zero transition.”

Rohit Kumar, Secretary of Carbon Markets Associationof India, said, “We wholeheartedly welcome the Government of Delhi’s commitment to presenting a green budget. This is a timely and progressive step that reinforces the importance of sustainable development in urban governance. Such initiatives will not only strengthen climate action but also encourage industries and citizens to actively participate in building a greener, more resilient future.”

The upcoming green budget is expected to prioritize investments in clean energy adoption, expansion of electric mobility, enhancement of urban green cover, and strengthening waste management systems. The government is also focusing on building climate-resilient infrastructure and accelerating policy frameworks that align with India’s broader net-zero goals.

The Minister further emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between government bodies, private sector stakeholders, and citizens to ensure long-term environmental sustainability. The Net-Zero framework under development will serve as a strategic roadmap, outlining actionable targets and timelines for emissions reduction across sectors.

Delhi’s green budget initiative reflects a broader vision to transform the national capital into a model for sustainable urban development, balancing economic growth with ecological preservation.
