Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty takes command as Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy

Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty has taken over as the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy on 15 January 2024. The Flag Officer was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 July 1989 and is a graduate of the Defense Service College, Wellington (2005) and the National Defense College, New Delhi (2017).

An expert in 'Gunnery and Missiles', he served as Commissioning Crew on INS Delhi and his entire specialist career has been as a frontline Guided Missile Destroyer. He has also served as Executive Officer of Seaward Defense Patrol Vessel, Guided Missile Vessel and Landing Platform Dock INS Jalaswa. He has also commanded the anti-submarine patrol corvette INS Ajay, guided missile corvette INS Khanjar and guided missile frigate INS Shivalik.

His staff assignments have included Training Commander at the Naval Academy and Command Planning Officer at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. He has also served as Staff Director at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Sri Lanka and also served as Defense Adviser to India in the Republic of Singapore and to the Republic of the Philippines with concurrent accreditation. He also served as Commodore (Naval Planning) during 2018-2020 where his responsibilities included preparation of prospects, finance and acquisition plans for the Indian Navy.

Following promotion to Flag Rank on 10 February 2020, he assumed the duties of Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Staff Requirements) at Naval Headquarters, where his responsibilities included capability development and formulation of strike strategy of the Indian Navy. Before assuming the charge of Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, he was the Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet from 15 November 2022 to 09 November 2023.
